DiMA Summer Playlist Newsletter 2023

1. Spotlight: Congress’ Hip-Hop Resolution

Bringing the history of hip-hop to Congress’ attention, Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-CA) introduced a resolution this summer to commemorate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. The resolution recognizes both the historic and ongoing contributions of the genre to American music and culture and tells the story of hip-hop, from its inception in the Bronx to the heights of its current economic success and influence.

Ahead of introducing the resolution, Rep. Kamlager-Dove joined Pandora’s Vice President of Music Programming, Joshua “J1” Raiford to talk all things Black Music Month as part of DiMA’s BMM series.  During the interview, Rep. Kamlager-Dove gave DiMA an early look at her plans for the resolution, stating that “we have an obligation to talk about the importance of this movement and what it has done to educate, elevate, and inspire, generations of young Black folks but also folks across the world.”

The announcement included a statement of support from DiMA’s then President and CEO, Garrett Levin:

“DiMA and its members join Representative Kamlager-Dove and the other resolution sponsors in celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Hip-Hop. Over the past half century, Hip-Hop has become a shining example of the power of music to tell vital stories, connect people both locally and globally, and drive and shape culture. From its earliest roots in the Bronx, this American-born music is now a global creative and cultural phenomenon. As Hip-Hop marks its golden anniversary, fans in the United States and around the world can celebrate by accessing their favorite old school MCs or finding the newest innovators on our members’ platforms. We’re proud to be able to share Hip-Hop’s enduring legacy and look forward to the next 50 years.”

2. Tune In: Music Cares 2023

Music fans, songwriters, artists, and others from across the music industry banded together on July 28th to serve local communities as part of The Day That Music Cares, an initiative driven by MusiCares, that harnesses the connective power of music to make a difference in the world. Volunteers from across the industry participated in things like raising funds for a variety of charities, packing boxes at food banks, and picking up trash from community spaces. As part of the music industry, DiMA is proud to showcase the power of music.

3. On Repeat: AI & Music

Artificial Intelligence is a current topic of discussion for almost every industry – music is no exception. The Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Intellectual Property joined the discussion with a hearing on artificial intelligence and copyright. To add to the conversation, DiMA shared a letter with Committee leadership on data challenges, new technology, and ongoing questions in the music industry. Read DiMA’s letter here.
