Music Streaming Highlights Throwback Tracks, Latin Music Artists as Platforms Name “Top 2022” Songs
“Reflecting the diversity of music and how fans listen, our analysis underscores that lists of the most played, most liked, and most requested songs by music fans on streaming services are themselves unique”
Washington, D.C. (December 29, 2022) – Throwbacks, movie soundtrack songs, hip-hop, and collaborations featuring Latin music stars and newcomers stood out among the most popular plays as the streaming industry looks back on 2022. A new analysis by the Digital Media Association reviews year-end data and charts from DiMA’s member companies – Amazon, Apple Music, Pandora, Spotify, and YouTube – highlight how Bad Bunny’s hits propelled Latin music into the top of every platform’s charts. Music fans also showed their dedication to Adele, The Kid LAROI, and Walker Hayes, keeping tracks that appeared in 2021 again at the top in 2022.
Additional findings from the review of the year-end lists of DiMA member companies include:
- Fans showed their growing love for Latin music for a third consecutive year, streaming Bad Bunny, Chencho Corleone, Karol G, and others throughout the year. Latin music and streaming continue to be a powerful duo.
- Music featured in movies and television shows played a big influence on music charts, with fans showing their love for “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from the film Encanto and “Enemy” from the Netflix series Arcane as popular tracks across platforms.
- Streaming empowered fans to rediscover music from an earlier era and discover remixes that bring together previous hits and new sounds. Songs like Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” – originally released in 1985 – and “Cold Heart – PNAU Remix” were in high demand from music fans.
“Reflecting the diversity of music and how fans listen, our analysis underscores that lists of the most played, most liked, and most requested songs by music fans on streaming services are themselves unique,” said DiMA CEO Garrett Levin. “Streaming services brought an incredible diversity of music to global audiences in 2022 and end-of-year lists showing the most popular songs include not only multiple genres but very different stories for how and why their popularity surged. I’m excited to listen to these songs, continue discovering new ones, and see what surprises 2023 will bring.”
